Today’s DoS (Denial of Service) attack in a nutshell.
At 3:15 PM Eastern Time to 5:43 PM ET, the main Mastodon and Misskey/Sharkey server went down due to a Denial of Service Attack.

Since this is a Denial of Service attack, which is a type of cyberattack that an attacker prevents access from user’s accessing a resource, no data was lost. The attack Sakurajima was affected by is a Loop Attack, which is a relatively new type attack that exploits application layer vulnerabilities using User Datagram Protocol (UDP) protocol to spoof an attack to go back at the host, thus generating a lot of traffic without a way to stop or limit it, basically taking down a single system or even an entire network, which is what happened in our case. I noticed that I had difficulties getting to the support portal and the control panel to investigate.
Note that this attack is relatively new, and it can affect other servers and networks. Thus, it’s important to keep your server packages and applications up to date.
