What is Misskey?

Misskey is an open source decentralized social networking software simular to Mastodon that it focuses on microblogging and uses ActivityPub. However, it has different set of features compared to Mastodon. It has additional features such as
  • Reactions
  • Quote Posts
  • Antennas (customizable timelines based on words, or a list of users)
  • Drive (ability to store files)
  • Channels (local user groups)
Misskey is popular in Japan and is developed by syuilo(しゅいろ) since 2014. The name Misskey came from the song, Brain Diver by May'n, the opening for the anime, Phi Brain.

Misskey also spawn several forks which have additional features. They are:
  • Firefish (formerally known as Calckey, EOL)
  • IceShrimp (fork of Firefish). Iceshrimp .net is not based on Misskey, but its own codebase.
  • Foundkey (fork of Misskey 12, EOL)
  • Catodon (fork of IceShrimp JS)
  • Sharkey (soft fork of Misskey)
  • Cherrypick (soft fork of Misskey)
Sakurajima Social uses a soft fork of Sharkey, called Sakurakey (Some customizations for Sakurajima Social), thus this guide here will mostly cover all the features of the recent version of Misskey in addition to features that are only in Sharkey such as post importing, bubble timeline, and more.
