One of the questions that users ask are what are the difference between sakurajima.moe and sakurajima.social. Here are some main differences:
Which one you should choose is up to you. If you rely on third party apps and clients, you should probably use Mastodon as the Mastodon API compatibility with our Sakurajima Social server is not as good. If you primarily use the web interface and want a familar interface to Twitter/X, using Sakurajima Social might be a better choice.
- Sakurajima Moe runs Mastodon (Glitch Social), and usually the bigger server out of the two since it's been around longer. Sakurajima Social, which started 6 months after the main server, runs Misskey (using a soft-fork, Sakurakey, which is a soft fork of Sharkey).
- Besides the differences of user interface, Misskey at Sakurajima Social have ability to view local timelines of Sakurajima Mastodon and Urusai Social (this is in development for Mastodon) and post importing. Misskey lacks the ability to follow hashtags, but can create custom feeds. Mastodon has greater third-party app and client support, and a GIF picker.
- Sakurajima Social is a lot smaller, but may have the same amount of available content. Also, Social has an upload limit of 2 GB for free users and 4 GB for users who donated in the past. There is no upload limit on Mastodon, but you can only upload images and short videos.
- Sakurajima Moe only has Local and Global timelines publicly available. Sakurajima Social has a Bubble timeline in addition to the Local and Global timelines. In addition, for logged in users, they have the ability to view a media only social timeline (Home + Local), Social (Home + Local), and Bubble Media (Bubble timeline, but only showing posts with media)
- Sakurajima Moe can follow hashtags, but Sakurajima Social cannot. However, Sakurajima Social users can make their own feeds using "Antennas" based on certain terms and from certain users.
- Sakurajima Moe users can use SSO to join the Sakurajima forums using the same account, this is a work in progress for Sakurajima Social.
