We will be having our own version of Bluesky called Sakurasora (Sakurasky) relying on the Blacksky relay. However, the app, feeds, and additional moderation will be done on our end (with the addition of using Blacksky’s moderation). The main Sakurasora feeds will contain Japanese media bloggers/creators, anime/manga industry accounts, and Sakurasora users.
If you are concerned about the direction of Bluesky moderation, you will be able to migrate your account to Sakurasora with Tektite provided by Blacksky Algorithms.
Closed beta will happen sometime this Fall. Any member who has been on Sakurajima for at least three months (no rejoins, as this resets the count) or who owns a blog listed on AniBlogTracker (https://aniblogtracker.app/sites.php) and already have a Bluesky account to migrate may request in invite when it begins. You use Tektite (https://tektite.cc) to move your account to the new Sakurasora PDS after receiving an invite code, which you will receive a sakurasora.social address.
Note that this is an extension of our services. The costs for Sakurasora and hosting will be reflected on the operating costs starting in 2026.
We expect to have the custom web app, feeds and PDS up and running sometime in October or early November. After a few weeks of settings it up and letting it run for a few weeks, we will open up invites to Sakurajima members (accounts 3 months or older) and any Anime Bloggers who have their blog listed on AniBlogTracker AniBlogTracker (https://aniblogtracker.app/sites.php). We will manually review artist, Youtuber, and VTuber accounts manually, as long it’s related to Japanese culture and media. Everyone else will have to wait until it opens fully to the public early next year. We encourage Anime Bloggers who are on the official Bluesky server to consider moving to Sakurasora when it opens up for invites. Besides getting a safer experience that is tailored for Japanese media fans, you are taking back control of your social media and not have to worry about Bluesky pulling the rug or pulling another Twitter. Since we are independent and relying on the infrastructure that powers Blacksky, your data is safer with us. Not only that, we won’t make controversal moderation decisions, just those to keep users safe.
The long term goal is to make Sakurajima (which includes Sakurasora) into its own organization so it can last for a long time. It will take a while to get there, but of course, substainability is the first goal we need to make.
