We know that the next few years are going to be some tough ones. For a while, I have covered half the costs, and it's not necessarily a big deal, but given this year and wanting to make Sakurajima sustainable in the long run, I have decided to start a fundraising drive. As expected, I have ambitious plans to grow Sakurajima to make it the destination for Japanese media fans in the Fediverse and beyond for the future of social networking, which will be decentralized and keep our Japanese media fandom community running for years to come.
The future goal is to make it into its own possibly non-profit organization so it can last for years to come. The plan to form a non-profit organization is, in addition to expanding our services by creating an alternative to TikTok based off Loops when it becomes possible, to provide hosting of BlueSky accounts with our own PDS servers so that Japanese media fans can host their accounts outside of Bluesky's control, and blog hosting, in addition to our Mastodon and Misskey (Sharkey) servers. Like most servers on the Fediverse, most, if not all, are donation-supported. Thankfully, our costs are mostly fixed, with much room to grow, thanks to using only a dedicated server as our central infrastructure with the object storage costs may change in the future.
Our main goal is first to make our services sustainable. That means having enough donations to cover our server costs, about $107 a month in the first phase. After we reach a little over the first fundraising phase, we can move on to the second phase, which is raising enough money to form a non-profit or public benefit organization, depending on the difficulty once we can form a non-profit organization and form a board consisting of our current staff members and even creators who create content around Japanese media or culture, which will, of course, make us sustainable for years to come, without having to rely on any ads and the such.
So far, we have raised about $201 out of $1284 (total yearly cost), about 15% of our goal. This is as of March 8th, 2025.
You can support us through the following. You don't necessarily need to be a member to help us. If you enjoy posts from our members or the bots we host, maybe throw in a few dollars per month. We will also explore other fundraising options, perhaps through merch or providing paid Japanese media blog hosting.
In addition, if you buy ebooks from Bookwalker or merch from CDJapan, you can support us through our affiliate links. See Sakurajima Costs for details.
We will give updates each month on the progress of our fundraising.
