It’s True, Sakurajima Social, a Sister Server is now Here (sort of)

Also setup in record time too!

After much thinking, I think it was best to create another instance to make it easier for people on the fence about moving from Twitter to Mastodon to have an alternative. Some of the reasons why some might not move over from the birdsite to Mastodon is because they find it intimidating.

We have a solution as Calckey, a fork of Misskey, makes using the Fediverse easy. It has most if not all, the features Twitter users expect, such as quote posts and text search (only known posts and users), in addition to other features like post reactions, groups, and more. Not to mention, the interface resembles Twitter more than Mastodon while looking better. However, there is one difference, Mastodon has post-editing and better third-party client compatibility than Calckey. Therefore, unless your client supports the Misskey API (see list), it will use the Mastodon API, which, while it works, is only for a few apps (one of them being Elk with the latest unstable release).

Calckey does support account migration and content import. However, the latter is temporarily disabled due to an issue with the follower’s mentioned feed being flooded when a user imports content. We will let everyone know when that feature is ready.

Note that our Calckey instance at Sakurajima.social is still under testing, and some issues must be fixed. Sometime this month, when everything is ready, we will open up registrations and even start accepting mod applications I can trust. Registrations can go back to request if trolls attack the server. However, we will be blocking all temporary emails. The trolls’ usernames are reserved (and suspended), so they can’t register accounts easily. The Calckey will test to see if our measures are good enough to allow open registration again on the main Mastodon server.

While Sakurajima.social is a separate server, you can still see all the local posts (except local-only posts) in the recommended tab. This means you can still interact with users from our main server without following them. However, the same is not true with Mastodon seeing the Sakurajima Social feed. However, users on the main server can see Sakurajima.social posts on the Federated feed and search, including users from there.

Note that the blocklist will be the same. Still, the rules for Japanese servers on Mastodon will not apply to the Calckey server with hiding the account containing them. This is because Calckey has an option not to cache remote media, unlike Mastodon, which caches all media. We have caching disabled, so we won’t get into any legal troubles. If it becomes possible to hide the content with keywords associated with Loli and Shouta, we will do so.

However, boosting and/or interacting with Lolicon and Shoutacon content is still not allowed and is against the rules. We hope that there is a keyword filter that can filter out the obvious keywords. Regardless, we will continue to block non-Japanese servers that host Loli and Shouta.

If you are used to Twitter, you can get closer to the Twitter layout by clicking More > Layout and clicking the Classic option. It will give you a layout closer to the birdsite.

Now it’s looking closer to that birdsite.

Additionally, we will be setting up an Elk server for Sakurajima.social at the end of the week.

Currently, we are in the soft opening phase. If you are in the Fediverse and thinking about moving to Sakurajima and want to try out Calckey, you can send a DM to @chikorita157@sakurajima.moe or fill out this form. Follow the instructions on the form carefully. Beware of the known issues as we are using the cutting edge. We do allow alt accounts and it’s recommended to try out Calckey before deciding to migrate. You can migrate back, but there is a waiting period before you can.

Also, Ai, which is the mascot of Misskey is restored and we removed all the “bird” badges, which is apparently the mascot of Calckey.

I hope you enjoy having fun trying out Calckey, perhaps it can become your new home, especially those who are unsure about Mastodon.
