All these changes in Discord are going to make it worse, i feel that is going to follow Skype and alternatives are still in development like Revolt.

Discord confirms it's moving toward 'becoming a public company' as it hires a former Activision executive as its new CEO

Co-founder Jason Citron is stepping down, but will remain with the company as a member of the board of directors.

With an Activision blizzard (former) executive taking over Discord, I don't know what that would bring to Discord's future. With ActivisionBlizard being linked to Microsoft, be very cautious. I wouldn't submit a selfie, because it could risk to them assuming your age by appearance and having a user account locked if they believe they are under age. The other option appears to be to submit some sort of copy of an id and.. yeah no.

No other option. Between submitting picture or id. One option might have less personal info associated then the other, both will identify you.

With id attached to onces social media account, if you do something someone in power might not like, they will probably (undoubtedly) know who you are.

This could lead to arrests, raids, or doxing+.

If you are looking for an alternative that is somewhat like Discord, Lemmy is pretty good. Users can create specific communities for specific topics, and there isn't any notable forced I'd checks. I would probably avoid u.s servers as more states try to press for more strict age confirmation enforced by law. No voice chat however, maybe the Fediverse should have a service where users can send voice messages to each other. Lemmy could try implementing something like that, probably won't. Lemmy isn't as user populated as Discord but there is some decent activity on some of the communities.

I was actually trying Revolt again, used it a long time ago but since i have a lot of irl friends in Discord is kinda difficult to completely get out :s
